Arnaldo Pomodoro
Foglio n.1/A, 1966
bronze, ca. 80 × 45 × 42 cm
The main idea of my Fogli of 1966, which I subsequently took up in the Papiri series, is the written page, the enlarged and dilated sheet, with all the connected cultural meanings which has within it the story, the thought, the history, the experience to pass on and alludes to the forms of modern communication. Symbolic moment of a sort of anthropological memory, where the cultural coexists with the natural and the technological alongside the archaic element.
Stefano Agosti wrote in 1987, presenting my solo exhibition at the Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara, “For the Fogli and the Papiri, the undecidability of external/internal, or of front/back, is marked through the incorporation, along the two faces of the object, of the surrounding space, obtained through the use of the wavy surface. We are here, probably, at the limit point of the deconstructive operation pursued by Arnaldo Pomodoro, where the undecidability of the elementary categories that normally determine the facts of spatial structuring of the forms is inscribed in their very globality and, if we want, integrity”.
