Arnaldo Pomodoro
Rotativa di Babilonia, studio
, 1991

patinated bronze, ø 75 × 22,5 cm

This sculpture came to me and into my hands after a trip to Turkey in 1991, in ways perhaps suggested by those borders: it is a wheel, 1,50 meters in diameter with lines engraved in the external circular strip. Rolled on soft ground, like a wheel on fresh mud or sand, the Rotativa traces mysterious and fascinating signs, similar to those engraved in the clay by ancient Middle Eastern seals.
Arnaldo Pomodoro

Due to its fundamental shape, the Rotativa resembles the discs and wheels created by Pomodoro in the 1960s, but in concept, and due to the daring decision to move its ideograms on the edge of the wheel, the sculptor explored new territory, recalling at the same time some of his most inspired theatrical machines, designed for the sets on the ruins of Gibellina.
Sam Hunter, 1995
