Arnaldo Pomodoro
Tavola dei segni, 1957, II, 1957
lead and wood, 34 × 51 × 5,5 cm
At the beginning of my sculpture work my works were small or medium: I started by "imitating" the Hittite and Sumerian tablets, the Egyptian papyri, and I composed my Tavole dei segni and then the Tavole dell’agrimensore with a dense series of signs, a pattern of points, knots and threads, like archaic and illegible writing. I used materials such as lead, which is easy to melt, and sometimes silver or gold, using a primitive technique, known in the old goldsmith's shop in Pesaro, casting with cuttlefish bone.
